This Zimbabwean movie is calling itself Africa’s first “High School Movie”

Nope, this is not an African “American Pie”. There are no shirtless summers either. This is a teen movie telling an interesting story about colour, and status.

The movie documents the struggles of a student of one of Zimbabwe’s post-colonial best schools, who is a bullied outcast and anime freak.

One of the strong underlying themes of the movie is the rush for power —a prefectship badge in the school and the free scholarship it comes with. The protagonist is in the race for the badge hoping he can win a scholarship to Japan to study anime.

The movie is shot in the documentary style where the protagonist is mostly looking out from the camera. We can see from the trailer that the movie is not only a multi-racial film, it is set to defy common stereotypes —like what race is civil and what race isn’t.

The best part about this movie is that it is Africans telling African stories for a global audience, something we haven’t had enough of since forever.

We can’t wait.
