7 takeaways (and one question) from the ’76 trailer that’s got everyone talking

Africa Magic famzed joined forces with Adonis Productions and Princewill’s Trust to make cinematic magic. The ‘76 movie has been at least four years in the making and after seeing the trailer, we can’t help but conclude that it may have been worth the wait.

The historical romance directed by Izuchukwu Ojukwu, tells the story of a young officer from the middle belt who gets entangled in a romantic relationship with a beautiful student from the South-Eastern part of Nigeria.

Their romance is threatened by endless military postings and they face the ultimate test when news of the soldier’s involvement in a botched coup attempt hit the headlines.

Here are a few things we found really striking about the movie.

1. The nostalgia.

The movie gives us a perfect window to reminisce on our past as a nation, when back to back military regimes, coups, counter-coups, and protests were the events of the day.

2. This is History 101.

Open to page 1976 of your history textbooks. Everything you see there under “happenings”, you will find in the movie.

2. Stellar cast.

The cast of the movie is as original as it gets. It is a huge relief having thorough-bred Nigerians, tell a very Nigerian story. With a cast like Rita Dominic, Ramsey Nouah, Chidi Mokeme, Ibinabo Fiberesima (she still acts?), Ada Ofoegbu, Daniel K Daniel amongst others, you know these guys are not playing.

3. The costumes and props.

No, there are no 2000-something uniforms or fashion statements so far. We have a complete ’70s feel to this thing. Ramsey’s hair, Rita’s hair, Ibinabo’s hair, everybody’s hair. On fleek.

4. The images look excellent.

This is some call-of-duty stuff. Dope.

5. They even brought back the ghost of Murtala Muhammed.

Then quickly sent him back to the grave.

6. It tells an important but often ignored story

It tells the story of not only the soldier, but his spouse, who is left longing for her husband’s return or made to suffer the effects of the loss.

7. It leaves you with one lingering question…

“When is the full thing coming out?” According to Africa Magic, we should expect it sometime mid-2016.
